Karen Hubbard called the meeting to order at 4 pm.

The minutes of the January, 2003 meeting were reviewed. The minutes were approved with one correction.

Mary Marchaterre passed out the February 3, 2003 Treasurer’s report that had been prepared by Terry Reynolds. The total amount in the FVPL accounts is $10,100.35.

A. Library Purchase Ideas

Ellen Seidel handed out an information sheet explaining in more detail Potential Collection Building Projects. We discussed the various options. Ellen is interested in the Interlibrary Loan purchase option. Faith Morrison moved that we provide $1,500 for the "Good Books For Undergraduates" option and $1,500 for the "Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery Wishes Come True Program". Don Durfee seconded the motion. The motion passed. The process for identifying good books for undergraduates to be purchased will be left to the librarians discretion.

B. Alumni Speaker Series Jan 21, 2003

This meeting went very well, with about 20 people in attendance. Eric Nordberg did a great job with the presentation. As a bonus, Bill Blumhardt and Rusty Hellman were there and provided some additional information.

C. Book Storage

Phyllis told us that Theresa Spence suggested that the Quincy Mine Association might have book storage space. Theresa is on their board. We agreed that Theresa should get our need on the Association’s agenda so that we could get more information on what kind of space they might have available and whether we could hold our sale near the storage area.

D. Report on Work Bee

The work bee went well. 80-90% of the work that needed to de done was completed. Some of the people at the work bee were Faith, George, Dee, Mary, Karen, Bette, and Dana.

E. FVPL Banner

We discussed the banner design. Faith will make the suggested changes and let us see the final proposal before it goes to the Print Shop for production.

F. FVPL in the Van Pelt Library during Winter Carnival

We discussed the details of setting up in the Library on Saturday, February 15, 2003 from 10 am to 4 pm. We will setup at 9:30 am. We decided to have one table and 2 book carts. We will sell books from the current book cart, plus populate an additional book cart with used books to sell. We will give out hot chocolate and cookies, and have a donation can (George will bring the donation can). We will also sell blankets and note cards. We should accept checks and credit cards only for larger purchases. More help is needed from 1:30 – 4 pm. Someone should ask Mike Miller if some Tau Beta Pi folks could help out during that time slot. Also needed are more cookies and plastic bags.

G. Mike Krenitsky died

From the February 7, 2003 Tech Topics:

FORMER LIBRARY DIRECTOR DIES

Michael Krenitsky, 87, Michigan Tech's former library director, died Jan. 25 in Largo, Fla.

H. Book Sale on April 8&9

We agreed to request more book donations.

I. Work Bee in March

We will discuss this at the March meeting.

J. Department Library Liaisons to check out sale books

Someone had requested that department library liaisons be allowed to look through our book sale books prior to the sale so that any books of value that they felt should be added to the library’s collection could be pulled from the sale. Don Durfee made a motion that they can join the Friends and come to the pre-sale and purchase books at that time like all other folks. The motion was seconded, and passed with one nay vote.

Meeting adjourned at 5:08 pm.

The next meeting will be March 13, 2003, 4-5:00pm in room 309 of the J. Robert Van Pelt Library.

Submitted by Amy Hughes, Friday, February 07, 2003.
