Minutes

Board Meeting

Friends of the Van Pelt Library

Thursday,  January 12, 2006

Present:  Dee Vincent, Amy Hughes, Brian Geiger, Mary Marchaterre, Karen Hubbard, George Love, Terry Reynolds, Phyllis Johnson, Dana Richter

Absent: Faith Morrison, Gail Mroz, Don Durfee, Bette Mongold, Dick Rupley, June Hawthorne, Patrick Quimby

Guest: Moses

Dee Vincent called the meeting to order at 4:07 pm.

The minutes of the December 1, 2005 meeting were reviewed and approved with one correction.  The Treasurer’s report balance for December 1, 2005 was $14,554.88, not $14,363.00.

Terry Reynolds handed out the Treasurer’s report which showed that the FVPL had $14,930.92 as of January 9, 2006.  The Treasurer’s report was approved.

A.  Book Drop Review

Phyllis Johnson told us that the book drop box in the library vestibule is full all the time.  Library staff periodically collect the books from the drop box.

B.  Request for funds from Ellen

Dee Vincent told us that Ellen of the library has requested that the FVPL transfer $750 to a library account to support the purchase of books for the paperback book collection.  This request was approved.

C.  Correspondence on Travel Grant

Dee Vincent mentioned the email information sent to us by Erik Nordberg on the status of the travel grants.

D.  Book Cart Update

Terry Reynolds did not get a chance to attach a cash box on our new cart.  He plans to do so before our next meeting.  Terry Reynolds told us that sales revenue from the book cart is back up to levels we had before the library construction.  This is due to the construction being completed and to Karen Hubbard keeping the cart filled with new titles.

E.   Econo Slips

Mary Marchaterre will email us the latest update on the collection of Econo receipts.

F.   Work Bee Dates

Dana Richter told us that he and Moses had spent some time in the FVPL storage area today organizing books.  We scheduled two work bees to sort and price books:

Friday January 20th from 9 am – 12 noon
Thursday January 26th from 2-5 pm

G.  Winter Carnival Sale

We decided to have a FVPL sale in the library on Saturday, February 11, 2006 during Winter Carnival.  Mary Marchaterre volunteered herself and Don Durfee to manage this event.  We will sell books, blankets, and notecards, and will offer free cookies and hot chocolate.  Dee Vincent will email Don Durfee to let him know about this.

H.  Move books to library from ChemSci

We decided that books will not need to be moved to the library from ChemSci because the books housed there were from last year’s sale and will be included in the all-day bag sale section.  Any books that should be sold individually in this year’s sale can be identified and pulled when we set up the sale.  We will need to move the blankets, notecards, and book sale supplies to the library.

I.    Book Sale

Dee Vincent reserved April 18-19, 2006 in the MUB Ballroom B for the FVPL book sale.  We would prefer the sale to be held in the MUB Ballroom A.  Amy Hughes will contact the MUB and find out if the MUB Ballroom A is available from 1 pm one day to 6 pm the next day on any two consecutive weekday days.  We will not schedule the book sale for break weeks for MTU or local high schools.

The meeting adjourned at 4:40 pm.  We then went to the storage area and sorted books unto the shelving by category until 5:00 pm.

The next meeting will be held on Thursday, February 2, 2006, 4-5:00 pm, in the library.

Submitted by Amy Hughes, January 13, 2006.
