Friends of the Van Pelt Library

Thursday, October 2, 2003

Present: Dee Vincent, Karen Hubbard, June Hawthorne, Don Durfee, Phyllis Johnson, George Love, Mary Marchaterre, Amy Hughes, Faith Morrison, Terry Reynolds, Patrick Quimby

Absent: Gail Mroz, Dana Richter, Marianne Brokaw

The minutes of the September, 2003 meeting were reviewed. The minutes were approved.

Terry Reynolds passed out the October 1, 2003 Treasurer’s report that he prepared.  The total amount in the FVPL accounts is approximately $11,316.90.  The report was approved.  Faith Morrison noted that the FVPL MTF account balance is $94.57 lower than last month, even though we did not move any funds out of it.  The amount must be a MTF fee.  We would like to understand how interest and fees are added to or deducted from the account.  It was suggested that Gail Mroz could explain to us how interest and fees are calculated and when they are posted to the account.  Terry Reynolds reported that we received $521.02 from Econo Foods for the receipts we submitted.

 A.        Annual Meeting

The Annual Meeting of the Friends of the Van Pelt Library will be held Tuesday, October 21 from 4:30pm - 5:30pm in the University Archives on the third floor of the MTU Library.  The speaker will be MTU Physics Professor Robert Nemiroff, who will talk about Mars and his new book "The Universe: 365 Days," which includes 365 days of pictures from space.  A short business meeting will precede the talk; refreshments will follow.

The following people volunteered to bring refreshments for the annual meeting:

Terry Reynolds: Punch

Karen Hubbard: Fruit

Mary Marchaterre: Econo cookies, napkins, cups, and a tablecloth

Mary Marchaterre will contact the MTU bookstore to see if they carry Nemiroff’s book and if we could have some to sell at the annual meeting.

Dee will ask Diane Garrow to do publicity for the annual meeting.

 E.         Book Storage – work bees

FVPL books are currently being stored in the Library 3rd floor office used by Sue DesRochers.  Pricing and boxing of the books needs to be done.  If anyone has time to work on them, they should contact Sue to set up a time.

Faith will check into using an empty faculty office in the Chemical Engineering building for storing FVPL books.

 F.         On Demand Acquisitions Initiative

Phyllis Johnson passed around a report on this project.  It has been going very well and the library would like to continue it.  Faith Morrison moved that we provide $3,000 from the FVPL Tech Fund account for the ”On Demand Acquisitions Initiative”.  Karen Hubbard seconded the motion.  Terry Reynolds abstained from the vote.  The motion passed.  Terry Reynolds will need the library account number to transfer the funds to.
