Thursday, October 6, 2005

Present:  Dee Vincent, Amy Hughes, Terry Reynolds, Dick Rupley, June Hawthorne, Brian Geiger, Don Durfee, Gail Mroz

Absent: Bette Mongold, Patrick Quimby, Faith Morrison, Phyllis Johnson, Mary Marchaterre, Karen Hubbard, Dana Richter, George Love

Dee Vincent called the meeting to order at 4:05 pm.

The minutes of the September 1, 2005 meeting were reviewed and approved.

Terry Reynolds handed out the Treasurer’s report which showed that the FVPL had $14,089.70 as of October 1, 2005.  The Treasurer’s report was approved.

A.  FVPL Newsletter

We discussed the October FVPL Newsletter, which had been mailed out Wednesday, October 5, 2005.  The mailing list was for donors to the library or the FVPL from October 1, 2004 through October 3, 2005.  There were only 68 names & addresses.  Several years ago, we sent over 300 FVPL newsletters.  Gail Mroz will find out why we have had such a large drop in the number of library donors, and report to us at the November board meeting.  Terry Reynolds suggested that we create a card that could be filled out by each student who helped at our book sale to capture their name, address, phone number, and email address.  We could then add them to the newsletter mailing and include them as Friends.

B.  Annual FVPL Meeting

The annual meeting will be held October 20, 2005 at 4:30 pm in the Van Pelt Library Archives. Dee Vincent will not be at the annual FVPL meeting.  Don Durfee will run the meeting.  Four board members are up for re-election: Don Durfee, Amy Hughes, Patrick Quimby, and Terry Reynolds.  Brian Geiger is up for election to the board.  The agenda for the meeting will be short – mostly elections.  We will have refreshments.  Terry agreed to bring cider, Gail agreed to bring brownies, others may bring whatever treats they would like to share.  We volunteered Mary Marchaterre to bring Halloween decorations and Halloween plates, cups, and napkins.

C.  Library Book Drop for M&M building

Debra D. Charlesworth is a faculty member in Biomedical Engineering and the Library Liaison for the department.  She emailed Dee Vincent and made the following request:  The department faculty inquired about the possibility of a drop box in their building for library book returns.  Debra spoke with Phyllis Johnson, and based on her assessment of the campus drop boxes, the M&M building would be a good place to put one.  The department is asking the Friends of the Library to support this endeavor.  Phyllis knows where to order boxes, and the least expensive one she found is $500.  Although the faculty are enthusiastic about having a box in the building and would use it, the departments do not seem willing to support this financially.

We discussed the request for a drop box in the M&M building.  It was proposed that we consider having two outdoor, drive-up drop boxes, one for library book returns and one for friends book donations.  A convenient location would be in the circle drive between the library and the union.  These drop boxes would provide service for everyone, instead of just for one building.  Don Durfee agreed to write up a proposal for this option.

D.  Laptops

The laptops purchased by the friends for use in the library are still not available to be checked out by students.

E.   Book Storage

We discussed FVPL book storage in the library.

The meeting adjourned at 4:35 pm.

The next regular meeting will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2005, 4-5:00 pm, in the library.
