Board Meeting
Friends of the Van Pelt Library
Thursday, September 4, 2003
Present: Dee Vincent, Karen Hubbard, Phyllis Johnson, George Love, Mary Marchaterre, Amy Hughes, Gail Mroz, Faith Morrison, Terry Reynolds, Dana Richter, Marianne Brokaw
Absent: June Hawthorne, Don Durfee
We signed and sent a card to Don Durfee because he had knee surgery.
The minutes of the May, 2003 meeting were reviewed. The minutes were approved.
Terry Reynolds passed out the September 2, 2003 Treasurer’s report that he prepared. The total amount in the FVPL accounts is approximately $11,324.69. The report was approved. Terry mentioned that the book cart sales are up mainly due to the work that Karen Hubbard has been putting into keeping the cart well stocked.
Faith Morrison suggested that we sell FVPL blankets at the MTU Fall Orientation next year, perhaps at the Sunday picnic. Blankets could be for sale at the CILIT dedication also. Phyllis Johnson suggested that we have the blanket re-designed to include some of the newer buildings on campus, including the new CILIT.
A. Annual Meeting
We discussed the annual meeting. Mary Marchaterre will ask Bob Nemiroff if he would be our speaker for the meeting. We would like Bob to talk about Mars, physics, and his new book. We would like the meeting to be held on October 21 or 23 – it will depend on Bob’s schedule. If Bob is not available to speak, Gail Mroz will ask Stan Dyl to give a talk about the Mineral Museum.
B. Map Sale
Terry Reynolds arranged the sale of the stack of flat maps to a guy named Dave, for $200.
C. Book Storage
FVPL books are currently being stored in the Library 3rd floor office used by Sue DesRochers. Pricing and boxing of the books needs to be done. If anyone has time to work on them, they should contact Sue to set up a time.
D. Peck Cho Resigns
Dee Vincent informed us that Peck Cho has resigned from the board. He is still the advisor for Tau Beta Pi and will continue to check with them about helping the FVPL with the book sale. Thank you, Peck, for your work with the FVPL!
E. Newsletter
Faith Morrison will create the FVPL Newsletter again. We discussed what should be included in the FVPL Newsletter. Some of the topics to be included are: the annual meeting, CILIT construction update, Econo slips, membership renewal information, book cart, book sale in 2004, book sale and book cart revenue, and Archive Travel grant recipients. Dee Vincent will request a library “friends” list from the Michigan Tech Fund to be used as the newsletter mailing list.
F. Status of the CILIT construction
Phyllis Johnson informed us of the CILIT construction status.
G. Econo Receipts
Mary Marchaterre volunteered to oversee the collection of Econo receipts for this year. Terry Reynolds has the 2 FVPL stamps used to stamp the Econo receipts: he will send one to Mary Marchaterre and one to Phyllis Johnson. On Fri, 05 Sep 2003, Dee Vincent sent the following information in an email to the FVPL list: The check from Econo will be issued the middle to end of September. This year it will be $446.84 - good job everyone. Plus I asked her to add the $74.18 that should have been carried over from last year.
The meeting adjourned at 5:00 pm.
The next meeting will be held on October 2, 2003, 4-5:00 pm in room 213 of the J. Robert Van Pelt Library. Submitted by Amy Hughes, September 9, 2003.
