“I would like to introduce the other Board members:

Marianne Brokaw, Don Durfee, June Hawthorne, Karen Hubbard , Amy Hughes, George Love, Mary Marchaterre, Faith Morrison, Gail Mroz, Terry Reynolds, Dana Richter, Tau Beta Pi (Patrick Quimby).  Ex officio members are Kent Wray and Phyllis Johnson.  Thanks also to Peck Cho, who has been a valuable board member that connected us up with Tau Beta Pi.  Tau Beta Pi has been instrumental in helping us with our book sales.  Also thanks to Udaya Kalluri for help with the Econo Slips Project.”

“The most exciting thing that has happened this year is the current building construction which broke ground in May.

The Friends fund two archival grant programs. One is a travel fellowship for Researchers and the other is a local history grant program.  We also fund the rental of the Library Popular Collection, the paperback collection, the good books for undergraduates program and the on demand acquisitions initiative. Money from our collection of Econo slips goes toward computer equipment.

Thanks to Friends members and supporters, we could not have done it without you!”

“Fund raisers last year included our Annual Used Book Sale which netted more than $2500, the Book Cart made $900.00 and Econo Food receipts brought in $521.00. We added a new event this year and provided hot chocolate and cookies at Winter Carnival and sold used books, blankets and note cards and brought in $590.00. We also continue to sell blankets and note cards.”

 Elections:

Three board members terms are up this year – June Hawthorne, George Love and Dana Richter. They have agreed to stand for re-election to the board.  There are 3 vacancies on the board and Bette Mongold and Richard Rupley have been nominated. There were no nominations from the floor.  All were in favor of these nominations to be elected to the board.

A slate of officers has been nominated to serve for the coming year:

All were in favor of these nominations, except that Terry Reynolds was not in favor of the Treasurer nominee.

“I would now like to introduce our speaker Dr. Robert Nemiroff, MTU Physics Professor, who will tell us about Mars and his Book ‘The Universe, 365 Days’.  We do have books available for purchase and book signing.  There is an open copy up here for people to look at.”

Dr. Nemiroff gave a very interesting slide show and discussion of Mars exploration and photos and of other space exploration and photos.

The next meeting of the Board will be held on November 6, 2003, 4-5:00 pm in room 213 of the J. Robert Van Pelt Library.
