Our interdisciplinary research is at the interface of science and engineering. The mission of our Catalysis and Electrochemical Energy Lab (CEEL) is to explore electrocatalytic processing of biomass-derived compounds (and CO2) to efficient production of electricity, valuable chemicals and fuels. Our current research work include development of advanced electrocatalysts, exploration of novel electrochemical processes, cogeneration of electricity and valuable chemicals from biorenewable polyols, electrocatalytic processing of biomass, storage of renewable electricity into hydrocarbon fuels from ligocellulosic compounds (electrobiofuels), electroreduction of CO2 to fuels (electrofuels), and high-performance, low cost fuel cells.

June 2014, Dr. Li gave a talk on electrochemical reduction of CO2 to hydrocarbons over supported Cu nanoparticles in a Workshop on CO2-based manufacturing organized by NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California.
June 2014, Li group's new paper “Electrocatalytic oxygen evolution over supported small amorphous Ni-Fe nanoparticles in alkaline electrolyte” was accepted for publication in Langmuir. Yang & Le, Congratulations!

November 2013, Li group's new paper "Integrated electrocatalytic processing of levulinic acid and formic acid to biofuel intermediate valeric acid" was accepted to be published in Green Chemistry - Yang & Le, congratulations!
November 2013, Dr. Li was honored to be invited by the Scientific Secretariat to apply for Eni Award 2014 in the field of renewable energy. The Eni Award was created by the Italian multinational oil and gas company Eni to develop better use of renewable energy, promote environmental research and encourage new generations of researchers.
November 2013, Dr. Li and his Ph.D. students Le, Ji, David and Yang attended the AIChE annual conference in San Francisco and gave four oral and one poster presentations.

August 2013, Dr. Li gave a 30 min invited talk on "low temperature electro-oxidation of hydrocarbon fuels for fuel cells" and presented our related work in a DARPA-funded Electrochemistry Workshop in Caltech, Pasadena, CA.

August 2012, Zhiyong successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation "Advanced Nanostructured Electro-Catalysts for Electricity Generation and Biorenewable Alcohol Conversion" and he is the first Ph.D. that graduated from Li Lab - Zhiyong: Congratulations and Good Luck to Your Future Career!
August 2012, Li group was awarded a new NSF grant on "Selective Electrocatalytic Oxidation of Polyols over Bimetallic Catalysts".

April 2012, Li group was awarded a 2002 Michigan Tech REF-RS (Research Excellence Fund - Research Seeds) grant for their research on "Cogeneration of Valuable Chemicals and Electricity from Biodiesel Byproduct Glycerol".
April 2012, our AFG enterprise teams successfully presented their work in the Undergraduate Expo at Michigan Tech.
March 2012, with professors Atanassov, Plamen and Lin Wenfeng, Dr. Li organized the "Materials and Catalysts for Fuel Cells" section in the 243 ACS meeting in San Diego, CA. Totally 47 oral presentations were given in 3 days, including the speakers from world class fuel cell research groups of Watanabe, Dodelet, Lamy, Sun (Shigang), Koper, Atanassov, Gonzalez, Strasser, and Daihatsu Motor, etc.
