The application deadline for international applications is March 15 for the following fall semester. The application deadline for US applicants is July 15th. The best time to begin a graduate program is fall semester, as many of the courses are sequential. Also, the Graduate Orientation and Teaching Preparation Program is held in late August to acquaint new students with the faculty and facilities.

An applicant will be considered for admission to the Graduate School if the following conditions are fulfilled:

  • The applicant has received a baccalaureate degree in chemical engineering from an accredited institution. For those whose undergraduate major was not chemical engineering, certain undergraduate prerequisites must be completed before financial aid will be available. Also, completion time for the MS degree is usually closer to three years for these students.
  • The applicant is adequately prepared for advanced study in a chosen field of specialization as demonstrated by the previous program of study and the scholastic record.
  • The applicant is recommended for admission by the Graduate Program Committee, the head of the Department of Chemical Engineering, and the vice provost for research and dean of the Graduate School.
  • All international students must supply the results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), an English proficiency examination administered by the Educational Testing Service. A minimum TOEFL score of 550 must be achieved before the department can give consideration to an application. Most of those admitted to Michigan Tech have a score of 600 or better.
