MASTER OF SCIENCEThere are two parts to the master of science degree: course work and thesis. Specific course requirements depend on a student's research interests and background. The University Graduate School requires at least 12 credits of courses at or above the 5000 level, a maximum of 12 credits of 4000-level courses, and allows between 6 and 10 credits for thesis research, for a total of 30 credits. The thesis research project is the backbone of the MS experience, and the choice of research topic is one of the most important decisions a student will make. The selection of an advisor is made by the end of fall semester of the first year of residence. A Research Advisory Committee is also formed at that time and it will help the student with research direction and course selection. At the end of their program, graduate students are expected to present the results of their research in an oral data evaluation seminar and defend their research thesis in a public oral defense. A master's degree can be obtained within fifteen months of enrollment. There is no foreign language requirement. Attendance at departmental seminars is mandatory for all graduate students. All MS students receiving financial support are required to take a minimum of 9 credits, which should include 3 credits of research (CM5990) each term.
