Graduate Financial Support

Forms for admission to the Graduate School and the financial aid form are regarded as application forms for fellowships and assistantships. All students admitted to the Graduate School are considered for these awards. In general, awards are made in March and April for the ensuing year.

A limited number of fellowships are awarded for full-time study. Michigan Tech doctoral fellowships are funded for a nine-month period at $1,200 per month, with tuition and fees covered.

Graduate teaching assistantships are awarded for instructional services to the department. Graduate research assistantships are awarded to work on specific research contracts and grants. Both teaching and research awards can be for the academic year of three semesters or for the entire year. The awards include a stipend plus payment of tuition and fees. The current stipend is $4,684 per semester for master's degree and doctoral students.

1. Departments or faculty can use funds from external or Michigan Tech Fund sources to provide students with support of up to $30,000 per year (not including tuition). Support from Michigan Tech Fund sources can also be used to supplement stipends funded from Michigan Tech's General Fund (i.e., GTA stipends).
2. Support for PhD students who lack an MS and have not yet completed the qualifying exam will be held at the 2009-10 level in future years until it is equal to the stipend level for MS students. At that point, the stipends for MS students and PhD students who lack an MS and have not yet completed the qualifying exam will be incremented at the same rate so that they are always equal to one another.
3. This stipend rate will be used by the Sponsored Programs Office for all PhD students during the preparation of budgets for proposals to external sponsors.

Students receiving assistantships must be registered as graduate students and must enroll for a minimum of 9 (MS) and (PhD) credits per semester. Teaching assistantships in chemical engineering generally involve service as instructors in the Unit Operations Laboratory, or in introductory chemical engineering courses. In addition to financial aid, these teaching positions provide invaluable experience for students interested in academic careers.
