DESIGN PROJECT IN ANOTHER DEPARTMENT

Design Project Presentation

Students may choose to participate in a design project offered in another department to complete the final credit of senior design lab.  Suitable projects must contain chemical engineering design components and have multiple realistic constraints.  Involvement in a project in another department usually requires two semesters of participation.  Most students begin participating in the project fall of their senior year and continue with the project through the spring semester.

Examples of projects that chemical engineering students have participated in the past include:

  • The WERC Environmental Design Contest through the Civil Engineering department.
  • High Expansion Foam Generator System, Foam Optimization project sponsored by Ansul/Tyco through the Mechanical Engineering department.

Students choosing this option MUST meet the following criteria:

  1. Enroll in the appropriate class(es) to substitute for CM4861.  This may require special permission from the department offering the class.  This class must be taken either concurrently or after CM4850 "CM Process Analysis & Design 1".
  2. Obtain approval of the substitution from the academic advisor and the department chair.  In order to obtain approval, the student will need to provide information that demonstrates that the project is comparable to those given in CM4861.

Additional credits earned while participating in a design project with another department, may be approved as engineering technical electives.  If you are interested in this option, contact the academic advisor before the end of your junior year for more information.
