What is the difference between form
drag and friction (skin) drag?
Skin drag refers to the drag that is due to the tangential stresses at
the surface of the sphere. Form drag refers to drag that arises
from the pressure term of the total stress and has origins in the need
for energy to redirect the flow stream. When the flow must go
around something (adjust to the form of an obstacle) it takes energy
and that energy appears as drag called form drag. See lecture 14
on external flows.
