Due 5pm Wednesday, March 5 2008
NOTE: The errata page for your text is on the web at this
link.
Note that not all
the questions are evenly weighted.
1. (10 points) 5.3 (compare various gamma dots)
2. (10 points) 5.11 (show second extensional viscosity is zero for
uniaxial and biaxial extension)
3. (20 points) 5.13 (make calculations on hypothetical constitutive
equation)
4. (20 points) For the fixed "fake" constitutive equation we made up in
class, calculate eta-(t), Psi1-(t), and Psi2-(t) (the material
functions for the cessation of steady shearing experiment). Hand
sketch your final results as a function of time AND as a function of
shear rate (the variation with shear rate is particularly important in
this case). Fixed "fake" constitutive equation: stress
tensor = -M(gammadot) (del v +(del v)^T) (see lecture 16 page 6), where
gammadot is the magnitude of the tensor gammadot and M(gammadot) is
given in lecture 16 page 7.
5. (20 points) Calculate the shear strain (equation 5.66) for t_1=0,
t_2=t for the start-up of steady shearing experiment
(gamma_dot_21=sigma_dot is given by eqn 5.22)
