Due Friday April 25, 2007 5pm in my office or in my mailbox
(Note: Firefox does not recognized symbol font; I have
described quantities that are rendered in symbol font so that you will
recognize them)
1. (10 points) Describe, in words, what was wrong with the generalized linear viscoelastic (GLVE) constitutive equation. What flows cause this equation to give predictions that are in error?
2. (10 points) Describe, in words, how we "fixed" the Maxell model constitutive equation to get the Lodge model. How is the Lodge model superior to the Maxell model?
3. (20 points) What is the Finger tensor for start-up of steady shearing? Be explicit in indicating the time dependence, i.e., indicate what C-1 is equal to for all times from -infinity to the current time t. You may make use of Table 9.3 (page 329); note that g (gamma, strain) is defined in the footnote of that table.
4. (30 points) Problem 9.17(derive cessation material functions, including first-normal-stress cessation function, for Lodge model) (You may need my help with this; you may use Mathcad or your calculator or look up the integrals in a table)
5. (20 points) Problem 10.14 (Calculate true viscosity for given capillary data) Here are the data so you do not have to type them into Excel.
6. (20 points) Problem 10.21 (Calculations with cone and plate)
