Board Meeting
Friends of the Van Pelt Library
January 17th, 2002
Present: Karen Hubbard, Terry Reynolds, George Love, Dana Richter, June Hawthorne, Dee Vincent, Kim Hoagland, Amy Hughes, Paul Munsterman, Phyllis Johnson
Absent: Faith Morrison, Peck Cho, Udaya Kalluri, Gail Mroz
Dee Vincent called the meeting to order at 4:00 pm; action items are in bold.
The minutes of the December 6, 2001 meeting were reviewed and approved.
The treasurer's report dated Jan 4, 2001 was reviewed and approved. Terry Reynolds said that he had hoped the fund would get over $15,000 before we spent anymore, but we didn’t make it.
Book Sale
Dee called the Community Arts Center and they will put the book sale on their calendar. Karen Hubbard had also called the Arts Center for the same reason.
Picking up Donations – Dana Richter said that he would be glad to keep picking up donations for the book sale. He will let us know if he needs help. Terry Reynolds has also picked up some book donations. We will NOT be accepting any magazines for the book sale.
Tau Beta Pi Dee Vincent gave Paul Munsterman a checklist of pre-sale to-do's. Paul said that they can fold and distribute the table tents for the book sale. He also said that they would ask Alpha Society members to help haul books.
We discussed how to make pleas for book donations. Phyllis will get an "all-depts" email notice out, and will send the Daily Mining Gazette a press release.
Books on the Web - Amy Hughes reported that the text book "Chemistry" by Raymond Chang sold on 12/12/01 on half.com. Sale Price $15.99 + 2.23 mailing allowance = $18.22. Half.com commission of $2.40. Actual Media Mail shipping cost of $3.58. We made $12.24.
Einerlei to sell cards? - Phyllis will check with the Einerlei.
Phyllis told us about a story she heard on NPR this morning about the National Library of Afghanistan’s need for materials such as engineering and chemistry books. We will think about whether or not there is anything we can do to send them needed books.
Lounge area improvements/changes
The library Access Services staff met last week and sent us some suggestions for the Friends lounge area.
1) develop PR and signage for the cappuccino machine--very few people are aware that it's here.
We support this suggestion. Phyllis will ask the Lode to do an article about the cappuccino machine.
2) move the handouts from the end of the circ counter to the lounge area and purchase a display unit for them
We discussed this suggestion and we decided not to support it. The current location of the handouts is convenient for library users.
The architect "The Smith Group" has been selected to design the CILIT (Center for Integrated Learning and Information Technology).
We discussed the Poetry Reading that was held over several days last year in the Lounge area. We did not make a decision about whether or not to hold another Poetry reading. We will discuss this topic at our next meeting.
Kim Hoagland informed us that there are no applicants for the archive travel grants yet.
Board membership
Patricia Van Pelt declined the offer to join the board. Renee Yaek has resigned her board position, Paul Munsterman took her place. We now have 13 board members. We can’t fill the other 2 spots until the annual meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 4:53 pm. The next meeting will be February 14, 2002, 4-5:00pm in room 309 of the J. Robert Van Pelt Library.
