A. Archives Speaker Series Jan 21, 2003
The alumni group will provide hot apple cider for the refreshments and we will provide the cookies.
B. FVPL in the Van Pelt Library during Winter Carnival
Phyllis Johnson asked if the FVPL would like to be in the Library on Saturday, February 15 during Winter Carnival to perhaps sell note cards and blankets. The Library is usually open from noon until 6 pm this day, but we could come in earlier. We decided to be in the library at 10 am and set up a table to sell note-cards, blankets and used books. We may or may not have beverages and cookies available. Don Durfee will organize this event. A sign-up sheet was passed around – Don Durfee took this sheet with him. We will also have FVPL newsletters and membership forms available.
C. FVPL Banner
Faith Morrison suggested that we have a banner made with the FVPL name on it. This banner would be nice to display at events that we host such as the book sale, speaker events, and fundraising events. Dana Richter moved that up to $50 be spent on a FVPL banner. Motion was approved. Faith Morrison said that she will post a proposed banner design and will get some information on the cost of having a banner made.
D. Book Sale
Kim Hoagland dropped off nine boxes of books in the library basement last week--a gift from Janet Avery. George Love brought in 12 boxes of books. If we don't have a place to store the books after our 2003 book sale, it’s possible that we will not be able to have a book sale in 2004 and 2005. This would severely cut back on our fundraising income. Phyllis Johnson told us that there would definitely not be any space in the library for FVPL books for the next 2 years. If we want to keep the books, we will need to find storage space. We decided to have a book work bee on Wednesday, Jan 29, 2003 from 4 – 5:30 pm to sort, price, and box books. Please bring empty boxes!
E. Wish list from Library
We discussed the library staff’s Wish List For Friends, 2002/03. We prefer the book collection ideas which include:
1. Outstanding books for College Libraries
2. Good books for Undergraduates
3. ILL/DD Wishes Come True Book Program
4. Additional titles for Popular Collection
We discussed the idea of DVDs. Phyllis Johnson told us that the library has not had video tapes available and isn’t set up to begin handling DVDs now. This is something that can be considered in the future.
F. "Books are Fun"
Karen Hubbard brought a program called "Books are Fun" to the board's attention. In this program a book vendor brings in new books and sells them. The sponsoring location gets 10% of the sales. The board was interested. It would be a good fundraiser. Would the university permit this? Amy Hughes will ask Bill McGarry if this would be allowed.
G. Second book cart in the MUB
We discussed the idea of having another book sale cart in the MUB like the one in the library. It seems like this would be difficult to keep stocked and managed. We decided to table this idea for now.
