PAWS Safety Program in the undergraduate Chemical Engineering Labs at Michigan Tech

The purpose of the PAWS program is to develop a safety community within the students enrolled in the Chemical Engineering laboratory courses. Students assume responsibility for their own safety, for the safety of those around them, and for the safety and protection of their environment.

The goal of the PAWS program is incident and accident prevention.

Students are involved in all aspects of the safety program. All Safe Operating Procedures, the Laboratory Safety Rules, and all Process Safety Reviews are conducted and developed with active participation of our students. The Safety Manual for use in the Chemical Engineering Laboratories is reviewed and edited every year by a team of students. Students perform an annual evaluation of the PAWS program and their own safety awareness. They suggest improvements for the following year and present their findings to the department faculty in oral and written format.
