J. ROBERT VAN PELT LIBRARY

The J. Robert Van Pelt Library has been completely remodeled in a major construction project. The library holds over 750,000 volumes, including a large number of US government documents. The Michigan Tech Library is the oldest selective depository for US Government documents in the country, having been established in 1876. The Van Pelt Library is also the home of the Michigan Tech Archives and the Copper Country Historical Collections, a unique collection of records from the earliest European settlement of the Keweenaw Peninsula, housing one-of-a-kind mining records that date back to the 1800s.

A database of the library's collections is computer-accessible, and researchers may access the University's holdings database from their offices through the Web. Many databases are made available to library patrons, either through CD-ROM or over the internet. Nearly any book is accessible to campus scholars through the Van Pelt Library s interlibrary-loan system.

The 80,000-square-foot library building is air conditioned and open until midnight most nights of the week. The library staff are available to aid researchers in all disciplines.
